Lodge Akaishi is a well-known jun-kissa (classic Japanese coffee shop) in Oku-Asakusa.The retro lighting and vintage table games give the interior a quintessentially Showa-era charm. Its signature dish is the Ebi Sandwich—thick-cut toasted bread filled with plump fried shrimp. The crispy coating paired with their homemade tartar sauce is exceptional, and was highly praised on television by the popular entertainer Sho Sakurai. Among fans, the “three sacred favorites” are said to be the Ebi Sandwich, Napolitan spaghetti, and the scallop gratin.Their coffee, carefully brewed using a siphon, is aromatic with little bitterness. The shop is also famous for being one of the favorite hangouts of Takeshi Kitano during his early days as an Asakusa performer, and many other celebrities, such as Naomi Watanabe, are longtime fans. Loved for generations, this classic coffee shop remains a cherished spot in the area—and unlike many cafés in Asakusa, it stays open into the evening, which is a welcome bonus.
